Land Liberation and Compromise: the challenges of forging a new consensus on land policy in Southern Africa
MetadataShow full item record
This is the documentation of the first event in ‘The New Land Question’ programme, which focused on the regional aspects of the land question. The event took place at NUST Hotel School on July 18th, 2018. Chris Alden, Professor in international relations at the London School of Economics, spoke about the ‘two narratives’ on the land question in Southern Africa. These ‘narratives’, are ‘lenses’ through which policies and programmes on land are seen, interpreted, and developed. In the specific case of Southern Africa, the ‘narratives’ remain anchored in the ‘liberation struggle’, which can be considered ‘the Land Question 1.0’. However, the realities on the ground have significantly changed, and while the nature of the land question is changing, ‘old narratives’ seem to remain. This document contains a summary of the key points made by Prof Alden as well as some of the matters raised in the discussion.
